A new Ghostbusters movie is coming out of of the Reitman camp! Exclusive announcements have revealed that Ivan Reitman is producing the film, and his son, Jason, is co-writing and directing. Fans will remember the elder Reitman as being the brain who directed Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, and the late Harold Ramis in the 1984 original.
Lucky for us, Jason Reitman grew up loving his dad’s movie just as much as we did and he vows to keep the original intact. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
I can’t wait to see how our proton pack wearing heroes fare in a world of cellphone cameras, social media, and livestreams. Will it hurt or help if the pesky EPA comes around again? Will Ecto-1 be equipped with a dash cam? Will you be able to text in your paranormal concerns or will you still HAVE to call?
We have no idea what the storyline will be or if any of the original cast will return, but the fact that Reitman considers himself the “first Ghostbusters fan” is promising. He was just as obsessed with the original as any other child of the 80’s. Ghostbusters has been a part of his life since he was six.
I love everything about it. The iconography. The music. The tone. I remember being on set and seeing them try out the card catalog gag for the first time when the library ghost makes them come flying out. I remember the day they killed Stay Puft and I brought home a hardened piece of foam that just sat on a shelf for years. I was scared there was a terror dog underneath my bed before people knew what a terror dog was.
In fact, remember that kid at the beginning of the 1989 sequel who informs Ray and Winston that his dad says “you guys are full of crap?” Yup. That was Jason Reitman. It’s funnier now, huh?
Sony Pictures has set filming to begin in a few months for a 2020 release. I want to make a cheesy ‘hindsight is 20/20 joke’ here, but I won’t. Instead, I’ll just tell you to watch the awesome teaser trailer below.
Oh and remember, when someone asks you if you’re a god, you say YES!!!
