Toy Story 4 – Vent Doll Nightmares
The full trailer for Pixar’s Toy Story 4 promises new friends, old friends, and some scary AF foes.
As in the teaser, the trailer starts off by introducing us to Forky, the new friend that sweet little Bonnie literally made at school. Woody acknowledges that Forky is the toy Bonnie is currently most attached to and encourages the other toys to help protect him. Forky serves to remind us that sometimes our greatest battles are fought from within as he struggles to accept his role as a toy. He finally gives up and takes it upon himself to change his situation by jumping out the window of a moving vehicle while informing the others that he was made for “soup, salad, maybe chili, and then the trash.”
Ever the selfless hero, Woody follows Forky into the dark and tries to answer his question of “why am I alive?” as they stroll into the town of Grand Basin. They find themselves in front of an antique shop where Woody catches a glimpse of what seems to be his beloved Bo Peeps lamp. They slip inside the shop where they encounter the wrath of a 1950’s pull-string doll and a gaggle of ventriloquist puppets who seem intent on adding Woody to the inventory.
I don’t know about you, but vent dolls are always a part of my existential crisis moments. The introduction of Gabby Gabby and her army of dummies puts this trailer in the perfect setting for a “let’s reimagine this as a horror movie” make-over. It honestly wouldn’t have much work do to, as the actual trailer does a fairly good job of creeping us out as is. I have a feeling there may be some onion layers to Gabby Gabby that remain to be seen, but for now she is just the epitome of cute but deadly.
In addition to suicidal sporks and nightmare fodder, which by the way is the name of my 80’s emo cover band, the fourth installment of the Toy Story series gives us a different look at Bo Peep. This version of Bo, in her sensible-but-still-adorable pantsuit, is worldly and seemingly hardened. She encourages Woody to look at his life with Bonnie and question why he’s happy spending his life with one child when he could have, quite literally, a whole carnival full of fun.
Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy.
Toy Story 4 starts playing with your emotions on June 21st, 2019.
